New Chinese Garden
The Traditional Chinese Gardens were utopias made of artificial sceneries for the upper-class. Though those ancient gardens are open to the public nowadays, we can still find the modern Chinese city landscapes full of new man-made installations which reflecting the structure of power. This work is going to show this phenomena through a fiction film by establishing a New Chinese Garden.
Fire Keeps Burning
夜游神 Yeyoushen
Yeyoushen, or the Night Wanderer, is a deity representing the night in Chinese traditional folk beliefs. Based on the mythological Yeyoushen, this project regards Yeyoushen as a deity who upholds the freedom and dreams of the "nightime" as opposed to the fixed social rules of the "daytime".
As a new member of adulthood, we seem to be constantly oscillating between day and night, trying to explore who we are and the meaning of freedom. We are eager to build a world of our own, but at the same time being fatigue and bind by countless discipline. Facing the ever-shifting worlds of day and night, freedom and discipline, we are always searching for the gravitational pull of our inner convictions, and seeking for a balance of our own.
The film is the story of "I" and the Yeyoushen, but also of "I" and "me".
Periscope
Periscope is an observation of a certain "undercurrent" beneath the surface of this quiet life. This set of photographs is a record of various sceneries and people I met during my wanderings around China in COVID years through my lens, and at the same time a reflection on how people face their present lifes. Through this series of photographs, I tried to explore the relationship between people and cities in the post-epidemic era from the perspectives of man-made landscapes, natural environments, religion and art, equiring the value and meaning of life. By integrating the heterogeneous elements of the images together, I created a slightly eerie atmosphere and try to unravel some hidden wounds.
